You must free your heart from every worry or distress you have accumulated during the day. You must turn your mind away from thoughts that chase past events or those of tomorrow.
If possible, seek a quiet place far from noises that strike the senses and distract the intellect from meditation. Having found it, accustom your body to pray at the same hour; sometimes habits make up for a lack of will.
Now begin to pray by meditating on the sacrifice of Jesus and the essence of His Heart: you will thus find the flame that warms your heart.
The living Jesus is beside you, He listens to you, comforts you, and invites you to follow Him. And you, in prayer, listen to Him and you will not be disappointed by the immense graces He will pour upon you.
Jesus is love. One enters into communion with Him if one loves and to the extent that one loves. The soul that loves and that Love has introduced into the dwelling where Love itself resides can speak to Him. Prayer is this dialogue, and Jesus does not resist the love that asks. "He does the will of those who do His will", says the psalmist.
To Love are due these divine communications that draw from their happy beneficiaries astonishing exclamations: "Lord, I beg You, stop the flow of Your love... I can take no more". Jesus draws praying souls with an irresistible force, binds them to Himself, holds them, immerses them in the hearth of love that is His Being; He draws from them hymns of praise and ardent adoration.
Thinking of union with God through prayer might appear as a blasphemous audacity, if not an offense to the divine Majesty. However, if infinite Mercy has deigned to grant this incomparable gift, rejoice.
When the soul enters into communion with the Father and the Son through the Holy Spirit, the dispositions of the soul place it in a condition to acquire the sense of divine transcendence. Looking out over the infinite, the soul feels extraordinarily small, weak, and powerless. It remains as if annihilated by the Majesty and Holiness of God, learning to know, in a single instant, its own nothingness. And it cries out like Peter: "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord".
In the light of God, the soul sees in itself only darkness and miseries, having the acute sensation of presenting itself to Him empty-handed, while reliving the past before its eyes, heavy with sins, infidelities, and resistance to Love.
In the presence of the thrice Holy, the soul discovers that the gift of God is absolutely free. In the supernatural realm, in fact, it has no right: everything is a gift of divine mercy.
When faith was put to the test, when it dragged itself miserable and aching in an impotent aridity, it did not always manage to dominate a little resentment and bitterness. Indeed, sometimes it was close to reproaching God for leaving it in that state.
If then the light, from time to time, came to clear the darkness, it seemed quite natural to it that God would grant such consolations. It had not yet understood that in Christianity everything is given freely and everything comes from above! It had not yet managed to comprehend what "the gift of God" meant!
But when it opens to God, it feels that the divine action envelops it, that God communicates Himself to it, and it cannot help but let itself be invaded by infinite Love! The instinctive motion of the soul then would be to touch God, to grasp Him alone, but once again it would learn at its own expense that it does not have the power to reach God on its own initiative. God eludes it. He gives Himself to the soul only when He wants, as He wants, at His good pleasure.
There is no means by which the soul can acquire with greater intensity the sense of the extraordinarily immense greatness of God. "If you knew the gift of God!".
Finally, and perhaps above all, it receives the conviction that spiritual ascent is accomplished only through Jesus, in Him and with Him. The soul knows it has nothing to do with it: Jesus has transformed it entirely, elevated it to the level of divine life, and introduced it there. The Divine Master has merited this extraordinary grace for it, applies it, and constantly communicates it.
Jesus, after having incorporated it into Himself, associates it with His own life, that life which He spreads and lives in His Mystical Body, the Church. Living thus the life of Jesus, the soul presents itself to the Most Holy Trinity as one of the members of Jesus, united with others, with all the Saints, and, first among all creatures, with the Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus and our Mother.
With Jesus, the soul dares to address its prayer to the Father, participating in the prayer of the Son, in His offering, in His filial love that the Holy Spirit inspires. The Holy Spirit teaches the soul to know the Father and the Son, to speak to them with simplicity and immense confidence. It no longer has fear, because it feels at home, a true daughter of the Heavenly Father.
Prayer is particularly suitable and very effective, if said with faith, for those who desire to receive Grace from the beloved Jesus. In the booklet we offer for free, there are many suitable for every type of request.
In tribulations, in anguish, in fear,
may my cry reach You like that of the apostles on the boat
at the mercy of the storm: "Master, we are perishing!".
Then You rebuked the wind and the sea,
the wind ceased and there was a great calm.
Calm the storms of my soul and drive away my anguish.
Free me from the fears that give me no peace.
In the torment of illness, in pain,
I want to beg You like that leper who moved You.
You reached out Your hand to him, You touched him
and said: "I am willing; be cleansed!" and he was healed.
I am here waiting, reach out Your hand to me too and touch me.
When the severity of the illness closes off all hope for me,
I want to cry out like the blind man of Jericho:
"Son of David, Jesus, have mercy on me!"
And despite many rebuking him, he cried out all the more.
Then You called him and said to him:
"What do you want Me to do for you?" and he was healed.
It does not matter if many want me to be silent,
I do not want to kill my hope and succumb,
but to cry out even louder: "Jesus, have mercy on me!".
I eagerly await for You to ask me: "What do you want Me to do for you?".
You helped the apostles while tired and weary they were
on the boat tossed by the waves due to the contrary wind.
You walked on the water and said to them:
"Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid".
To Peter, who desired to come to You, You said: "Come!".
When, due to the violence of the wind, he became frightened and began to sink,
You ran to his aid and reached out Your hand to him.
As soon as You got into the boat, the wind ceased.
If I walk to come to You,
if I am plunging into the abyss of despair
and faith does not sustain me, hurry to my aid,
reach out Your hand to me and save me.
Come Jesus, because where You are, evil cannot be.
You have helped every infirmity,
You have answered every cry,
You have been moved by every misery.
The blind have regained their sight,
the deaf their hearing, the mute their speech,
the paralyzed their health, the dead their life.
Now hear my incessant cry: "Come Jesus, heal me!".
In Your name, Jesus, is enclosed Your power
and only Your presence can heal me.
I am here before You, Lord Jesus.
Even though I am a sinner, I trust in You.
Do not look at my sins and forgive me,
wash me with Your blood and I shall be freed.
Hear the cry for help that I feel rising from the depths.
Enter my heart, save my soul,
heal me from this affliction and suffering.
Touch me and I shall be healed.
Thank you Jesus for all that You are doing for me.
Thank you for Your love.
