To pray and live as Christians, the spirit and practice of penance are essential: no authentic Christian can do without them.

Penance begins with the awareness of sin, develops in repentance, inspires order in life's choices, manifests itself in confession and in the work of restoring the personality distorted and the charity overturned by sin.

It is completed in the Sacrament that reconciles with God and with the community of men. And it continues with a renewed, attentive and continuous watchfulness over faith, hope and charity, over justice, over fortitude against temptations, over placing tendencies and instincts at the service of goodness.

Yet penance, in current mentality and culture, hardly finds any place. Even movements and prayer groups seem to ignore it.

What is missing is meditation on the life of Jesus, on His victory accomplished through His mercy towards sinners and through His voluntary passion.

Even sacramental confession is deserted, or at least it is not accompanied and followed by awareness and daily penitential practice.

"How to Encounter God's Love. The Awakening of the Soul" suggests many themes that have to do with the Christian's penance.

It presents its richness and its multiple connections with spirituality and with conduct of life. It helps to fill the void that has unfortunately spread regarding reconciliation and the virtue of penance.

It is decisive for the whole of life to know whether the soul is mortal or immortal, whether there is an afterlife after death, whether there is a God who welcomes us and judges us.

We need to re-establish the relationship with the Almighty and with our brothers and sisters, to regenerate that energy capable of shaking the conscience, awakening enthusiasm and love.

In short, we need to restore the dialogue of the soul with God.

Every heart feels the need for the beautiful and the sublime, because it holds the memory of the lost Paradise, kept in the depths of the soul.

Every man would like to tear off a piece of heaven and live on this earth with the happiness that reigns there in his heart.

In reading this volume my soul was illuminated by God, my heart was set ablaze by His flame and, spiritual reading, prayer, meditation, led me into the light.
